Stained glass refers to coloured glass or works created from it. Traditionally, it is made in flat panels and used as windows. The colour in the glass is obtained by adding metallic salts during its manufacture. The small pieces of coloured glass are arranged to form patterns or picture which are then held together traditionally by strips of lead and supported by a rigid frame.
Glass is made by combining together some forms of silica such as sand, an alkali such as soda and lime or lead oxide. The colour is produced by adding a metallic oxide to the raw materials, Copper oxide, producing ruby, blue or green colour. Metal strips in the usual U or H shape are then used to hold the glass pieces together to form a stained glass window.
Making stained glass is an art. It requires one to have artistic skills to work out the design and engineering skills to assemble the pieces together.
Generally, stained glass window has a life span of 75 to 150 years before they are in need of re-leading. The reason why stained glass is so expensive is the raw materials used in making stained glass are limited.
